ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to analyze the current trends of the elder abuse and self-neglect that take place at home. The data reported to the Korean Elder Protection Agency in 2017 were used in this study, and the data were 4,129 cases of the elder abuse and self-neglect occurred at home. Cross-tabulation analyses were used to analyze several categorical data. The results showed significant differences between genders, between recipients of the State basic pensions and non-recipients, and among household types. As for the family-environmental agent of the elder abuse and self-neglect at home, the most predicting factor was the conflict between the victim and the abuser. Especially, most cases of the physical abuse may result from the conflicts among family members. As for the self-neglect, the most significant agent was the family financial difficulties. The findings were discussed in the context of systems supporting both abused older adults and family caregiving abusers to prevent the elder abuse and self-neglect at home.
