Effects of a Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention Program on Reduction of Care Burden for the Caregivers of the Demented Elderly Patients

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectivenessof a cognitive-behavioral intervention program. The program wasdesigned to reduce the caregiver's burden who cared for a personwith dementia according to DSM-Ⅳ by psychiatrist and was onthe medication. Participants were 31 caregivers and were assignedinto 2 groups, program intervention group (n = 14) and controlgroup (n = 17). Intervention group met every week for 2hours for8 times. The cognitive-behavioral intervention program consists of3 parts, the education on dementia and stress, stress managementand coping skills. After participating in the program, caregivers'depression and anxiety levels were significantly decreased and theirquality of life was significantly increased. The suggestions and thelimitations of this study, and the directions of future study werediscussed.
