Knowledge and Attitudes toward the Elderly for the Female College Students and their Mothers

ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study were to examine the difference andcorrelation of knowledge and attitude toward the elderly for thefemale college students and their mothers and to present basic datafor intergenerational aging intervention strategy. Research participantswere 91 students and their mothers, and the researchinstruments were Palmore(1988)'s FAQ I and Sanders et al.(1984)'ssemantic differential scale. The major findings were that knowledgeon aging for the middle aged women scored significantly higherthan their daughters, but attitudes toward elderly people for thestudents were significantly more positive than their mothers, andthere was a significant correlation between the knowledge and theattitudes only from the middle aged women. The findings werediscussed in the context of developing social education program onthe elderly for the middle aged women and young generations.
