Analysis of the Evaluation of Gerontological Clinical Practice by Nursing Students and Clinical Instructors

ABSTRACT

This study was to analyze the evaluation of gerontological clinicalpractice by nursing students and clinical instructors. The evaluationtools were composed of self-evaluation and case study process bynursing students, and clinical evaluation by field instructors. Datawere collected from 283 nursing students and 8 clinical instructorsduring 2008 and 2009. In a case study, nursing students assigned ahigh rating to assessment, diagnosis, and nursing records butassigned a low rating to planning. In the evaluation of clinicalpractice, nursing students and clinical instructors rated thefollowing fields in increasing order: Skill, knowledge, and attitude.There were significant differences in the evaluations betweenknowledge and skill. It is essential to investigate the needs ofnursing students in the planning of gerontological clinical practiceand to develop tools and guidelines for reliable and valid evaluationin various care settings.
